Omar Prince as Montgomery Clift

THE RAREST OF BIRDS is a one-man show based on the complex and self-destructive life of brilliant actor Montgomery Clift. The show ran off-off-Broadway to rave reviews. “The Rarest of Birds” is the first live production to be realized after years of failed attempts at bringing this actor’s legendary life story to the stage or screen. Actor Omar Prince is astounding as Clift and clips of the original production have been incorporated into an upcoming A&E Biography television special. The show runs 75 minutes without intermission and is performed on a bare stage with 3 chairs, 1 table, no light changes and brief audio cues consisting of a pre-recorded epilogue and prologue on CD. There are minimal props and no costume changes.

Unfortunately the story behind the making of Freud is far more interesting than the film itself which was released in 1962. Clift was visiting Huston’s Irish Castle, St. Clarens for a script consultation. Huston refused to believe Clift was gay. He walked into his bedroom announced and was shocked to find Clift in bed with another man. Later, before filming Huston laid down the law:

“You are not to behave in a homosexual manner or have homosexual relationships while working on my film. You are not to drink and take pills or have dependent friendships with older women.”

Montgomery Clift and Liz Taylor did three films together:

A Place in the Sun 1951

Raintree County 1956

Suddenly Last Summer 1959

He was set to film Reflections in a Golden Eye with Liz. She committed her large salary as insurance in order to secure Clift for the physically demanding role but he subsequently died of a massive heart attack in 1966 before filming began, and the role went to Marlon Brando.
